Kathleen Wilkie

I'm an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in the Department of Mathematics. My current focus is the systemic response of a host to cancer and its treatment. Specifically, I study cancer immunology, the dynamics of heterogeneous cell populations in cancer progression, the role of the tumour microenvironment in intercellular communication and tumour development, and cancer treatments through the lens of quantitative systems pharmacology. I use a systems approach that integrates experimental data with mathematical models to create predictive tools for hypothesis testing and exploration. You can check out my research here

Open Postdoctoral Fellow Position

Mathematical Modelling of Colorectal Cancer and the Microbiome

Qualified candidates are invited to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship appointment in mathematical medicine under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Wilkie at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Contract length: 1 year renewable subject to performance and funding availability
Salary: minimum $65,000 per annum plus benefits, commensurate with experience
Start Date: September 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter

The successful candidate will develop predictive, mechanistic mathematical and computational models of colorectal cancer within the gut ecosystem. The models will be calibrated to and validated against experimental and clinical data to study the growth dynamics of the tumour-bacterial interactions, and response to treatments will be explored with virtual populations.


Required Training: The ideal candidate will have strong academic and publication records in mechanistic mathematical/computational modelling, a high degree of autonomy, and excellent communication skills. They will work well with collaborators, be detail-oriented, and well-organized. The candidate is expected to disseminate their work through journal articles and conferences.

A PhD in applied mathematics, complex systems, or a related discipline is required. Demonstrated mathematical modelling skills using data-informed quantitative analyses, differential equations, and/or quantitative systems pharmacology; programming skills (ie Julia); prior knowledge of the human microbiome and cancer biology are assets.
